SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- A Connecticut man prosecutors say caused the death of a 5-year-old child when he tried to climb from the driver's seat into the passenger seat of a car going nearly 90 miles per hour on a Massachusetts highway has avoided jail time.

Kareem Rashed of Bridgeport, Conn., pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges including motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation in connection with the October 2010 death of Jalyn Francis.

The Republican (http://bit.ly/NQKKNt ) reports that Rashed was sentenced to time served -- 348 days -- and two years of probation.

Authorities say Rashed was driving 88 mph along Interstate 91 in Holyoke with Jalyn in the back. Prosecutors say he tried to switch places with the front seat passenger. The car veered out of control and rolled several times in the median.
