No new trial for Springfield man convicted in 2008 murder

SPRINGFIELD >> The highest court in Massachusetts has denied the request for a new trial by a Springfield man convicted of fatally shooting a man in the face with a sawed-off shotgun in 2008.

The Supreme Judicial Court's decision issued Wednesday said that Steven Gonzalez didn't present an argument sufficient enough to grant him a new trial or reduce his life sentence.

Gonzalez was convicted in 2012 of killing Alexander Gautier on Oct. 17, 2008, in a dispute over drug sales and territory in Springfield.

The appeal argued that Gonzalez was only convicted because his original lawyer failed to adequately represent him.

The high court ruled that some errors were made by Gonzalez's trial attorney, but they were deemed "not likely to have influenced the jury."
