n The boys also have a strong roster to start with nine returners. Will Kirby leads the Mounties after finishing 11th in the state last year. Coach Hiram Greene said he's confident that preparation-wise the Mounties are in good shape. Hoosac Valley

Things you should know

n Hoosac's numbers are down a bit this year, with just 12 skiers in all.

n The Hurricanes' boys returners are all in good shape. Justin Barnes and Butler are fourth-year skiers who have been training on roller skis and bicycles. Trimarchi and Galisa are coming off soccer, while Haley and Mitch Barnes are coming off cross country running.

n Danielle Beauchemin has been Hoosac's female star the last couple years, but she is dealing with injuries from the fall soccer season. Gwozdz still expects her to be ready for the start of the season.

Coach: Gary Miller

Key returners -- Girls: Josie Marshall, Jr.; Lydia Graham, Jr.; Sophie Silverstein, Jr.; Caroline Wilkerson, Jr.

Boys: Andrew Woodger, Sr.; Jake Jourdain, Jr.

Things you should know

n The conversation in Lenox has begun the last couple years with Josie Marshall. Now a junior, Marshall is coming off a fifth-place finish at last year's state championships.

nThe Lenox girls are looking strong said coach Gary Miller. The Millionaires have no seniors but they do have a strong core of 11 juniors.

n Miller called the boys team a "work in progress." Woodger and Jourdain are complemented by a strong group of skiers from grades 8-11 that are ready to hit the trails after spending most of 2012 racing at Alpine ski areas.

Coach: Kiersten Touponce

Key returners -- Girls: Ellen Ross, Jr.; Jess Voight, Sr.

Boys: Curran Doyle, Jr.; Alex Stevens, Sr.; Nate Ivanowsky, Sr.

Things you should know

n The Warriors have seen an explosion in numbers. Wahconah has 33 skiers this year, including 15 that are new to the team.

n The girls will lean on junior Ellen Ross and senior Jess Voight. Coach Kiersten Touponce said Ross is ready for the season while Voight, in her fourth year, is a great technical skier with good form.

n This is Stephanie Ambrose's first year as coach but she has coached Pittsfield and Lenox track and field in the past. She's a personal trainer and fitness instructor at Berkshire West. Her daughter, Lizzy Barry, skis for Lenox.

nThe issue, as with many other teams, has been a lack of snow in preseason. Ambrose was waiting to see how her team looked on skis so she could get a better idea of where everyone fits on the team.

n Ambrose said her goal is trying to build the co-op team into a strong program over a couple years.
