The first "Up Front for DeMar" 5k run and 1 mile walk will be held Sunday, Veteran’s Day, to raise money for a scholarship fund in U.S. Army Spc. Michael R. DeMarsico’s name.

DeMarsico, age 20, was killed in action on Aug. 16 by an improvised explosive device while serving in Afghanistan. DeMarsico had volunteered to be "Up Front," protecting his battalion and fellow soldiers.

The race will begin at the Veteran’s Memorial at 9 a.m. and finish at the American Legion.

Collections will also be made for care packages for deployed soldiers and sent in DeMarsico’s honor and memory.

For more information, to help as an event sponsor, contact Eileen Monyahan at (413) 663-7898 or at upfrontfordemar5k@verizon.net.

Registration forms are available at City Hall, Planet Fitness and Olympia in North Adams, Berkshire Running Center in Pittsfield, and via email and Facebook.
