North Adams Downtown Celebration rescheduled for Thursday
NORTH ADAMS -- The city's 19th Annual Downtown Celebration, which was originally scheduled for tonight, has been rescheduled for Thursday due to a turbulent weather forecast.
The annual celebration of food, entertainment and mingling in the streets will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Main, Eagle, Holden and the northern part of Ashland Streets will be limited to foot traffic only.
"Even though the event had been rescheduled, all of the activities and info tables will still be there, and the weather looks much nicer for Thursday," Veronica Bosley, the city's director of tourism and community events, said. "People will also be able to circulate between our event and Party in the Park, happening at Noel Field."
Today's weather forecast calls for a 100 percent chance of precipitation with heavy rain and possibly a thunderstorm before noon expected, according to the National Weather Service in Albany, with rainfall amounts between one and two inches.
More than 100 participants, including local merchants, vendors, restaurants and community organizations are expected to take part in Thursday's festival.
The event was first held in 1996 to celebrate the completion of the city's first phase of beautification projects.
The First Baptist Church of North Adams will offer a children's activity area with bounce-houses.
Childcare of the Berkshires will host a children's area at the mouth of the Steeple City Plaza parking lot with activities, games, and information for parents.
The North Adams Ambulance Service will also be on hand for car seat safety checks, and the Berkshire County Sheriff's Office will run a child ID station.
Attendees can also expect to see street walkers, magicians and other live performances.
City officials have stated that no parking will be allowed on Main or Eagle Street after 1 p.m. on the day of the celebration. Cars that remain parked on these streets will be towed at the owner's expense.
