North Adams man held after car break-in and foot chase
NORTH ADAMS — A city man is being held on $1,000 cash bail after allegedly using a hand-held tool to break into a car and then leading police on a brief foot chase.
Zachariah Chaffee, 35, of 150 Ashland St. is charged with daytime breaking and entering into a vehicle to commit a felony, two counts of malicious destruction of property over $250 and possession of a burglary tool.
At 2:40 p.m., police received a report that a Stamford, Vt. woman witnessed a man with long dark hair, a beard, and dark clothing breaking into a vehicle. According to police, the woman chased the suspect and grabbed him, tearing his shirt. Several police officers joined the chase and Chaffee was spotted hiding in some bushes in the River Street area by Officer Joshua Zustra.
Chaffee is expected to be arraigned July 13 at the Northern Berkshire District Court.
