North Adams man seriously wounded in Williamstown hunting accident
WILLIAMSTOWN >> A North Adams man was seriously injured early Monday in what may have been a hunting accident.
Michael Pontier, 50, was shot about 7:30 a.m. near Hopper Road in Williamstown, according to Williamstown Police. He was transported to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, and was later transferred to Albany Medical Center in New York.
The person responsible for the shooting, who has not yet been identified, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, police said.
Monday was the first day of hunting season for wild turkey in Massachusetts. Hopper Road winds through a wooded area in South Williamstown.
The Massachusetts Environmental Police, the Massachusetts State Police Berkshire CPAC Unit and the Williamstown Police are continuing to investigate.
Local police deferred calls seeking more information to the Massachusetts Environmental Police, which did not return calls.
