North Adams stabbing under investigation; mayor seeks emergency meeting
NORTH ADAMS -- Two people were stabbed and another was struck in the head with a bottle during a melee involving 20 to 30 people near the Artery Lounge early Saturday morning, according to North Adams Police Director Michael Cozzaglio.
"At approximately 2 a.m., an altercation took place with between 20 to 30 people," Cozzaglio said Saturday. "The altercation spilled out onto Union Street from in front of the Artery Lounge, which resulted in two people being stabbed and one person having a bottle being broken against their head."
Cozzaglio said the three people injured were transported to North Adams Regional Hospital and at least one was transported to Berkshire Medical Center's trauma unit from NARH.
Information was not immediately available Saturday on the conditions of the injured parties, whose names have not yet been released.
"I know their injuries were severe enough that one was transported to BMC," Cozzaglio said.
As of late Saturday morning, one arrest had been made in the case.
"We do have suspects, and one party is under arrest," Cozzaglio said. With the investigation still ongoing, Cozzaglio declined to name the person arrested or additional suspects and what charges they might face.
Meanwhile, Mayor Richard Alcombright said Saturday that as a result of the altercation, he is seeking an emergency meeting of the city's License Commission.
"In my mind, enough's enough," Alcombright said. "There have been problems up at that location for quite a while. When you're dealing with something like this, public safety comes to mind of course, but so does the safety of police officers and patrons up in that area. I'm trying to convene an emergency meeting of the License Commission and possibly have a meeting today."
Alcombright declined to detail what action might be taken against the Artery Lounge by the License Commission if a meeting is convened.
"We're going to act on this immediately. We can't allow that to happen here," Alcombright said of the scale of the altercation and the severity of the injuries.
Further details will be reported as they become available.
