O'Connell puts five Western Mass. sites up for auction
This story has been modified to add a fifth Berkshire location in North Adams.
PITTSFIELD >> O'Connell Oil Associates is continuing to shed properties.
The Pittsfield-based company has put six additional Western Massachusetts sites — five of them in Berkshire County — up for sale at auction.
The move comes after O'Connell recently conveyed 22 other Western Massachusetts sites that it owns in the Pittsfield and Springfield markets to Waltham-based Global Partners LP via long-term leases.
The auction is scheduled to for 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 28 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on West Street in Pittsfield. It is being conducted by Tranzon Auction Properties of Maine, a national auction agency that has a state office in Arlington.
The five Berkshire County sites being offered at auction are located at 26 Commercial St. in Adams; 621 Main St. in Dalton; 275 Elm St. in Pittsfield, 1 State Rd. in North Adams, and 259 Main St. in Williamstown, according to documents on Tranzon Auction Properties website. The sixth property is located at 2821 Boston Post Road in Wilbraham.
Neither Tranzon representative Samantha Kelley nor O'Connell CEO Michael R. Sobon returned telephone calls seeking comment.
The properties in Williamstown and Wilbraham are listed as gas/service stations and convenience stores, while the three others are listed solely as gas/service stations, according to the auction documents. The Williamstown site also has a drive-thru, while the Wilbraham property sports a car wash.
Each of the five properties contains a building with more than 1,000 square feet. The properties are being sold in "as-is" condition with no contingencies, according to Tranzon. Under the terms of the auction, closings are scheduled to take place within 45 days of the sale.
Of the 22 O'Connell sites involved in the Global Partners' transaction, 12 were located in Berkshire County, including four in Pittsfield. All of those properties contained gas stations and convenience stores.
Founded in 1925, O'Connell Oil Associates also has offices in North Adams and Northampton. Prior to the Global Partners deal, O'Connell operated 29 Convenience Plus stores, seven gas stations, a wholesale gasoline business, and full-service commercial and residential plumbing, heating and air conditioning departments, according to the company's website.
Tranzon has been involved in the sales of other Berkshire commercial properties including the auction of three Burger King restaurants in November 2012.
