Oldies show to benefit Pittsfield Fourth of July Parade
PITTSFIELD — Classic 60s hits from Detroit, Nashville and New Jersey, with comedy bits mixed in, all will be highlighted to benefit next year's tribute to America through downtown Pittsfield.
The 30 cast members of the Oldies but Goodies Rock 'n Roll Show is ready to take the stage at Reid Middle School on upper North Street on Friday and Saturday to benefit the Pittsfield Fourth of July Parade Committee. The curtain goes up both nights at 7 p.m.
The live band is under the direction of Brian Benlien and includes Frank Algerio, Tony Gubelman and Dale Zavatter.
The two evenings of music and merriment in recent years has raised between $10,000 and $12,000 toward the $85,000 goal the parade committee sets each year to stage the Independence Day celebration. Proceeds from this weekend's performances will help fund the 2016 parade, according to committee President Peter Marchetti.
"It is great to receive the support of another community organization to assist in the fundraising for our annual parade," Marchetti said. "Both organizations understand and respect the planning process to produce a great quality event for our community."
This year's theme, "Musical Mystery Tour," features the Motown sound, country tunes performed at the Grand Ole Opry and songs of the Jersey Boys and other East Coast groups. The shows will also be a tribute to veteran Oldies performer Dawn McElveen, who at 62, died in early September, according to Peggy Bourdeau, the show's co-producer with Donna Phair.
"[Dawn] was the inspiration for this year's show and we had been in rehearsal before she passed away," she said.
A friend of Bourdeau and Phair since their high school days, McElveen was a 4 foot, 11 inch dynamo, always upbeat and giving, who will be sadly missed.
"She had such enthusiasm and energy," Bourdeau said. "At rehearsal we feel her absence, but she would want us to go on."
