OLLI offering wide range of course topics this fall

PITTSFIELD -- Twenty courses spanning topics from climate change to military Japan and from presidential crises to photography and Italian cuisine will be sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Berkshire Community College this fall.

OLLI provides enrichment programs for mature Berkshire residents led by a variety of accomplished guest instructors.

Registration is now open for classes, which run Sept. 16 through Oct. 29, at various venues, including: BCC, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williams College and Bard College at Simon's Rock.

This fall semester also marks the beginning of a yearlong celebration of OLLI's 20th anniversary.

Curriculum has been chosen to highlight the most successful of past OLLI course themes and to expand them into intriguing current subjects. According to OLLI President Sandra Rubin, courses will be both "thought provoking and fun."

Kit Dobelle, U.S. chief of protocol in the Carter Administration and later chief of staff to first lady Rosalynn Carter, will call on her experience to focus on the Camp David accords, the Iranian hostage crisis and normalization of relations with the People's Republic of China.

Five engaging professors from MCLA will present various components of the course "Climate Change: The Current Science and Policy Response" at the new 65,000-square-foot Center for Science and Innovation on the North Adams campus.

Bard College at Simon's Rock professor Bernard Rodgers Jr. will examine fiction of the 1950s and 1960s with Jack Kerouac, Joseph Heller, Norman Mailer, Saul Bellow, Vladimir Nabokov and Sylvia Plath.

Students will "Meet the Artists" at NUarts Studios and Gallery in Pittsfield, exploring the creative process and encouraging students to enhance observation and analytical skills.

The fall semester is six weeks in length and has offerings that will appeal to any curious mind. OLLI students are welcoming to new members and excited that more than 900 of them continue to grow intellectually and socially in one of the Berkshires' enduring programs.

OLLI at BCC is a member-led organization for people ages 50 and over. OLLI offers courses, lectures and special events 12 months a year at venues throughout Berkshire County -- no tests required.
