Orpin, Leamon lead the way in 3-0 Greylock win
WILLIAMSTOWN -- The Kelsey Orpin and Sophie Leamon show took center stage for the Mount Greylock girls soccer team Thursday evening.
The pair's two goals and tough defensive play powered the Mounties to a 3-0 victory against North Berkshire rival Drury under the lights at John T. Allen Field.
The Mounties (3-1-1) wasted no time getting on the board early in the first half. Five minutes in, Leamon darted through midfield, dribbling past five Blue Devils defenders, finding Orpin wide open on the right, who then punched it past goalie Ali Tatro to give Greylock an early 1-0 lead.
Orpin said that her goal was the result of good communication on the field with Leamon: "It was a give-and-go and just told her to pass it through when she did and it worked."
Mounties coach Tom Ostheimer said Orpin's early goal was critical in establishing momentum for the rest of the game.
"That first goal was huge for us because we've had trouble scoring this season. To get Sophie just carrying, carrying, carrying and maming that easy pass [to Orpin] who then put it in the back of the net. That really set the tone for us in this game."
The Blue Devils (1-3-0) were finding quality scoring chances few and far between against the tough Mounties' defense. The Blue Devils' closest opportunity to crack goalie Margot Besnard came eight minutes in when Allison Meehan found Celene Koperek to her right, but Koperek's shot sailed wide right of the right corner of the net.
Orpin's aggressive play would set up the Mounties with two quality scoring chances early in the second half, but her breakaway shot was stopped by Tatro a minute into the half, and a header which she set up from the right corner sailed just above the crossbar.
Orpin's third opportunity would be the charm, as she centered the ball from the right corner to Leamon, who sailed one past Tatro with 33:08 remaining to give Greylock a 2-0 lead.
Melissa Swann would tack on a late goal for the Mounties with 15:09 remaining in the half.
Sophomore Orpin has welcomed an increased role in the Mounties attack, said Ostheimer.
