Otis man faces multiple charges from weekend head-on crash
OTIS -- An East Otis man will be facing multiple charges in Southern Berkshire District Court after allegedly hitting the vehicle of a mother and child and fleeing the scene while under the influence of alcohol this weekend.
According to Otis Police Chief Roberta Sarnacki, the two-car head-on accident took place around 3:35 p.m. on Saturday, at the intersection of East Otis Road and Norton Road.
Rebecca Nourse, 40, of Sandisfield, was heading west on East Otis Road (Route 23) in a 2008 Honda Ridgeline. Her four-year-old son was a passenger in the vehicle.
A second vehicle, a 1998 Chevy pickup truck with a plow, was driving east on Route 23, operated by Donald J. Chaffee III, 34, of East Otis.
Chaffee allegedly crossed the center line, struck Nourse's vehicle and fled the scene. He was located a short time later by police.
Officer Ken Pettibone and Chief Roberta Sarnacki responded to the scene, and were assisted by officers Nicole Miller and Steve Hilton of the Becket Police Department.
The Otis Fire Department also assisted at the scene. Nourse sustained minor injuries and was attended to by the Otis Rescue Squad. Her child was uninjured.
Chaffee was transported to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
According to a police report, Chaffee is being charged in Southern Berkshire District Court with operating under the influence of alcohol, operating after suspension, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and attaching plates.
