Pearl award at 10 years

Saturday June 9, 2012

Naomi LaChance of Mount Grey lock Regional High School be came the 10th winner of the Daniel Pearl Berkshire Scholarship this week, which attests to how far we have come since the days of 9/11 and their aftermath. But just as the terrorist attacks on America will never be forgotten, neither will the former Eagle and Transcript journalist who was kidnapped and killed by terrorists in Pakistan in January of 2002 as he pursued the trail of al-Qaida for the Wall Street Journal.

In her winning essay, Ms. LaChance, wrote about Mr. Pearl’s passion for seeking "truth and knowledge, for humanity and freedom" in his global journalistic travels. She also wrote about how she was moved by the sight of Mr. Pearl’s laptop, passport and Persian phrasebook on display at the Newseum in Washington D.C.

The $1,000 award, chosen by a four-member committee of veteran Berkshire-based journalists, goes to a Berkshire student who shares one of Mr. Pearl’s twin passions, journalism and music. Ms. LaChance will major in written arts with a concentration in human rights when she attends Bard College this fall. The cause of humanity in a troubled world served as the foundation for many of Mr. Pearl’s journalistic pursuits.

With the awarding of the 10th Daniel Pearl Berkshire Scholarship it is appropriate to recognize those who preceded Ms. La Chance. They are: Zach Robarge of Pitts field in 2011, Patrick W. Madden of Mount Greylock in 2010, Elizabeth Mur ray of Adams in 2009, Samantha deManbey of Sandisfield in 2008, Brian F. Mastroianni of Adams in 2007, Linnéa K.
