PHS boys get hoop tourney berth with win
PITTSFIELD -- The Pittsfield High boys basketball team clinched a berth in the Western Massachusetts Division II tournament in emphatic fashion on Saturday, outrunning O’Bryant High of Roxbury, 73-65.
Pittsfield is now 10-0.
The Generals were led, as usual, by Amancho Adopo, who scored 33 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and dished off nine assists. Ben Lawlor, a 6-5 swingman for O’Bryant, scored 30.
Pittsfield fell behind 20-16 after a quarter. But the Generals executed a stunning turnaround, outscoring the visitors 37-13 in the second quarter to lead, 53-33 at halftime.
"They have a very tall, athletic team," said PHS coach Steve Ray. "We had trouble matching up with them. We switched to a zone in the second quarter, and our transition game really kicked into gear."
Ray credited Josh Conant and Josh Bonny for keeping the bigger, more athletic O’Bryant players off the glass.
Brattleboro 47, Wahconah 31
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. -- The game was close for a while, with the Warriors down by only four midway through the third quarter. But that was as close as Wahconah got.
"We weren’t particularly patient on offense," said Wahconah coach June Blake. "And I didn’t think our defensive intensity was very good, either."
Maddie Sprague led all scores with 16 for Wahconah.
Greylock 55, Lee 43
WILLIAMSTOWN -- MacKenzie Flynn’s 15 points led Mount Greylock to its seventh win of the year, 55-43 over Lee.
In addition to Flynn’s points, Lucy Barrett added 14 for the winners.
"They’re a scrappy team," said Greylock coach Paul Barrett. "They certainly didn’t give up. We had a little trouble with turnovers tonight, although I thought we rebounded very well."
Lee got a game-high 16 from Alyssa Kelly.
Spartans go 2-2
VOORHEESVILLE, N.Y. -- The Monument Mountain wrestling team was .500 on Saturday at the Ichabod Crane Duals, a nine-school meet.
The Spartans defeated Rennselaer High 40-37 and Cohoes High School 51-21. They dropped a 72-4 decision to powerful Columbia High and a 63-17 loss to Adirondack High School.
Robert Yvon at 195 was the only Spartan wrestler to score against Columbia.
"Well, they have a great program, but we wrestled them tough," said Monument coach Gordie Soule. "It took them a while to get through us."
Sebastian Zapata at 138 was 7-1 with three pins for Monument, while Jonah Christianson at 138 and Mark Leon-Duque at 170 were also 7-1. Steve Cormier was 6-2 at 132 with three pins.
Taconic fourth in R.I.
JOHNSTOWN R.I. -- Led by Dylan Sickell at 145, the Braves had seven wrestlers place at the Johnstown, R.I. tournament on Saturday.
Sickell finished second overall, while teammates Mason Papirio at 132, Jordan Knowlton at 160 and Josh Broskey at 195 all finished third.
Nick Bailey at 126, David Jones at 220 and Ivan Gonzales at 285 were all fourth.
Everett 12th in Northbridge
NORTHBRIDGE -- Bradley Lupiani was the gold medalist at 126 at the Northbridge Invitational.
Lupiani had three pins on the day, including in the final, pinning Matt Gabrielle of Bellington in three minutes.
Anthony Lupiani at 106 and Pat Fosby at 113 finished fifth while Nick Turnbough was fourth at 182.
The Eagles were 12th out of 17 teams.
Greylock’s Hilchey finalist
ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. -- Travis Hilchey was second in the Baker Classic on Saturney, one of three Greylock wrestlers o place.
The event is one of the bigger meets in New England, with 33 teams from throughout the east.
In addition to Hilchey, Dave O’Brien was sixth at 160 and Johnny Colon fifth at 170.
