Pittsfield 15s open Babe Ruth tourney with a 19-1 victory
PITTSFIELD -- The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 15-year-old All-Stars put together another dominating performance in a 19-1 mercy-rule win over Worcester Southside in the Western/Central State Tournament on Thursday.
The win moves Pittsfield to 2-0 in a pool play. The team has won its games by a 37-2 margin so far.
Worcester threatened in the first inning as Connor Durward and Solomon Morway reached on a one-out single and walk, respectively. Pittsfield starting pitcher Ryan Abel regrouped, striking out the next two batters to end the inning.
"We took care of business against a team that didn’t match up well against us," Pittsfield coach Pat Tierney said. "It looked like they were going to put up a fight, but Ryan came back and got two straight outs. We scored a couple runs quick and we went from there."
Abel overpowered Worcester with his fastball, striking out six and scattering three hits in five innings.
At the plate, Pittsfield capitalized on several miscues by Worcester, pulling away early. Three errors in the fourth inning allowed Pittsfield to bat around, scoring seven runs in the inning.
Jack Scarafoni was a big run producer for Pittsfield, with an RBI single in first inning, and a two-run single in the second. He finished 3 for 4. Deonte Sandifer had a two-RBI single in the third. Matt Stracuzzi, Jordan Nassif and Abel added two hits as well.
"It makes my job a lot easier," Tierney said when asked about the strong offensive output from his team. "Eventually we think we’re going to be in some tight game where we’re going to have to tighten up. The atmosphere will not be as relaxed as this. ... But it does feel good."
Pittsfield returns to action Saturday versus Northbridge, 2 p.m. at Deming Field.
