Pittsfield: Berkshire Elms Alumni announce book awards


PITTSFIELD >> The Berkshire County Alumni Chapter of The College of Our Lady of The Elms, Chicopee, has announced its annual Book Awards for the 2016-17 academic year. Winners are Rebecca Cao, $400, and Kelan O'Brien and Alyssa Barnes, $300 each. All are from Pittsfield.

Cao is a double major in nursing and computer information technology and in her fifth year of college. She will graduate in 2017.

She holds offices in the Student Nurses Association and the Elms International Club on campus and is a member of the Veterans Club. She volunteers for the Elms Care Van, a mobile health service in the Springfield area.

Cao carries a grade point average of 3.40 and plans to pursue a graduate degree and become a nurse practitioner.

O'Brien, who will also graduate in 2017, is a history major with a minor in management education studies. He carries a GPA of 3.91.

O'Brien was named to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. On campus, he serves as a student representative to the General Alumni Board and secretary of the Student's Activity Board. He also serves as a tutor, student ambassador for the Admissions Office, as well as a telethon assistant and resident advisor.

This is the third time he has achieved the Berkshire Chapter's Book Award. O'Brien expects to pursue a master's degree.

Barnes, a double major in biology and chemistry with a minor in bioethics, will graduate in 2019. Her goal is to attend medical school.

On campus she serves as treasurer for the Veterans Club and is a member of the lacrosse team. She is a Certified Nursing Assistant and carries a GPA of 3.74.
