WILLIAMSTOWN — The stakes could not have been raised any higher.

With the Pittsfield boys track and field team and the Mount Greylock girls both looking to finish out the Berkshire County track season undefeated, both squads went into the final race of their final meet needing first-place results to finish things off.

And both got the results they were looking for.

The Pittsfield boys held off Mount Greylock in the 4-by-400 meter relay, while the Greylock girls did the same to PHS as both teams finished with perfect 7-0 records in the county.

"It's just unbelievable," Pittsfield senior Ben Meisl, who ran on the final relay team, said. "Senior year, to just be able to pull it out with the 4x4 and the end like that, it's crazy.

"It's like the stuff you dream of."

There was a dreamy-ness to the meet itself. With the Mounties hosting both the Generals and Hoosac Valley under the lights at Williams College, the atmosphere just felt different.

And as the results started coming in, the tension became palpable.

In the end, the Pittsfield boys picked up the sweep with a 75-66 decision over Greylock and an 88-56 win over Hoosac Valley. The Greylock girls topped Pittsfield 75-66, and the Hurricanes 100-41.

The Greylock boys beat Hoosac 86-55, and the Pittsfield girls bested Hoosac 101-40.

"The pressure was certainly on, but I really think we've been training for this moment the whole season," Greylock's Melissa Swann said. "And we are glad it worked out the way it did."

The Pittsfield boys pulled out the win thanks to depth in the right places. The Mounties dominated the longer distances and ended up winning 9 of the 17 events between the two sides.

Pittsfield, though, used three first-place finishes from Jackson Rich (110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, javelin) to rack up points and the Generals took all nine points up for grabs in the 110 hurdles and the javelin.

"We had just a bunch of kids that are hard workers," Pittsfield coach Joe Albano said. "We have a lot of musicians, a lot of honor roll kids, and they are used to coming and working hard and being successful."

"Honestly, could not have had a better track meet in my life," Meisl added about the atmosphere. "This was a close track meet, Greylock is a great team, they have some incredible runners."

The Greylock girls, meanwhile, leaned heavily on their young distance runners. With Pittsfield taking first-place finishes in the short-distance sprints and relays, hurdles, and four of the six field events, the Mounties made up ground with the long runs. Greylock won the 4-by-800 to start the meet, then took first in the 400 through Maddie Albert, the 800 through Swann, the mile and two mile through Margo Smith, and the 4-by-800 to give themselves a chance.

But, like the Pittsfield boys, bunching in events brought the thought of an undefeated season into reality.

Trailing in the later stages of the meet, the two-mile was a clean sweep for Greylock, with Smith leading in Cat Cavalli and Isabelle Bote. But for that to even matter, the Mounties needed a key field results — the javelin. Dagny Albano and Claire Whitaker stepped up, going 1-2 against Pittsfield to set the stage for the final relay.

The finish on Tuesday was similar to Greylock's win over Monument earlier in the season in the sense that athletes stepped up — even if they were different ones.

"It was different girls today," Greylock coach Brian Gill said. "In that Monument meet, we counted and I felt we stole points in the jumps and sprints and hurdles, and today we put it squarely on the shoulders of our distance crew, and they are young. We knew we had to score."

For the Greylock boys and the Pittsfield girls, the results in the end made things slightly sour, but on both sides there was as much a sense of respect as their was disappointment.

"Greylock is really tough and I knew it was going to be a tough time if we beat them," Pittsfield girls coach Stephanie Ambrose said. "Then, we started having [personal records], and good times left and right and the score was very close. It did come down to the end, the score was so close, but we just couldn't pull out those last points."

Tommy Kirby, a senior for Greylock that did not have a winning season until this year, was happy to see his team finish 5-2 on the year in the county.

"This team has just been incredible this year," Kirby said. "So many young kids stepped up to replace seniors. They just have good heart. You look at how they reacted to losing today, our whole team went and shook Pittsfield's hand. It just speaks to the kind of team that we have, and I'm really proud of all the guys on this team."

While much of the focus on the meet went to the title races, the Hurricanes dotted in some impressive results despite picking up losses on both sides.

Peter Barrow set a new track record in the discus with a throw of 128-feet 11, and he also won the shot put (43-8). The Hurricanes also won the 100 through Avery Hall (11.80). For the girls, Olivia Bresett took the discus (83-7) and Hannah Koczela won the triple jump (30-6).

Rich finished the 110 hurdles in 17,.00, the 400 hurdles in 1:02, and the javelin with a throw of 139-9. Kirby won two individual events, taking the 800 (2:06) and the two mile (10:13.2). Cameron Castonguay won the 200 (24.30) and the 400 (52.90) for Greylock.

Albert won the 400 in 1:01.80, and Swann took the 800 in 2:33.50. Smith won her events in 5:43 and 12:22 for the mile and two mile, respectively. Albano threw the javelin 88-6. Pittsfield had multi-event winners in Molly Tierney and Sadie Supranowicz. Tierney took the 100 hurdles in 17.20 and the 400 hurdles in 1:10.80. Supranowicz won the 100 in 13-flat and the 200 in 26.60.

Teams now turn their sights to the postseason meets. The Western Mass. team championships will happen this weekend, then the Western/Central Mass. meets will happen the weekend after, and the state meet the weekend after that.
