Pittsfield car crash causes power outage in 1,800 homes, businesses

PITTSFIELD -- A one-car crash late Wednesday afternoon resulted in a brief, but significant power outage and tied up traffic on one of the city's busiest streets for several hours.

Roseline Benle, 18, of Pittsfield was driving her Honda Passport SUV on West Housatonic Street, just west of Center Street, about 5:20 p.m. when she lost control of her vehicle and sideswiped a utility pole, according to police.

Benle wasn't injured and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The accident forced the closure of West Housatonic between Center Street and Henry Avenue to allow Western Massachusetts Electric Co. crews to make repairs to the utility pole and power lines. Police expected to reopen the road to traffic about midnight.

WMECO reported the accident knocked out power to an estimated 1,800 homes and businesses. A company spokesman said the majority of the affected customers were back online within 15 minutes of the crash.
