Pittsfield: Churches plan community Ash Wednesday service

Five churches from four different denominations will mark Ash Wednesday at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, with an ecumenical worship service at Zion Lutheran Church on First Street.

The worship service will include the imposition of ashes and communion and will feature Zion’s Jazz Trio: The Rev. Andrew Barnett, piano; Andy Wrba, string bass; and Bill Chapman, drums.

Clergy from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, South Congregational Church, First Church of Christ Congregational, First United Methodist Church of Pittsfield, and Zion Lutheran Church collaborated to create this service and it includes elements from each denomination’s liturgical tradition. The service will also include jazz versions of familiar hymns and songs.
