Pittsfield collector plans tax taking on overdue fiscal 2015 bills
PITTSFIELD — The tax collector's office plans to place liens on up to 70 properties with tax bills overdue from fiscal 2015, which ended on June 30, 2015.
According to a full-page notice in The Berkshire Eagle on May 26, the property owners — primarily homeowners — have until at 10 a.m. Thursday to pay the taxes and interest owed to avoid a tax taking.
After that deadline, the matter will be turned over the city treasurer's office and additional fees will be added to the bills.
Since the notice appeared, Sheehan said about eight owners have come in to pay their outstanding tax bills, but about 70 remain on the list. Initially, she said, the total in fiscal 2015 taxes owed the city was about $141,000, but that figure is now down to $119,388.
The collector said the list of delinquent taxpayers she publishes annually includes only those from a single tax year — soon to be among those bills sent in the past fiscal year.
The unpaid bills are then turned over to the treasurer's office, she said, and owners are encouraged to contact that office if they want to pay the back taxes and fees or set up a payment plan.
Although the delinquent fiscal 2015 bills totaled more than 70, Sheehan said there are encouraging signs in that the total fell from more than 100 properties listed last year.
"This year is very good," she said. "We haven't had this low a number in three or four years."
Most of the properties described in the legal ad are single-family homes, but there are a few commercial properties, some open land and a few rental properties.
The majority listed range from $1,000 to $2,500 owed in taxes, but a significant number owe less than $500 and several owe less than $100.
Water bill liens also are listed against several of the properties on the list.
