Pittsfield drowning victim identified

PITTSFIELD -- Authorities have identified the man who drowned in the west branch of the Housatonic River last week as 18-year-old Christian Giovanni Marquez, of Los Angeles, Calif.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner officially confirmed Marquez's identity Friday. His body had been brought to Chief Medical Examiner's office after it was pulled from the river June 26.

Marquez had apparently been traveling cross country, according to the Berkshire District Attorney's office. Police believe Marquez had been in the Berkshires for only a few days.

According to local authorities, Marquez went under water June 25 while swimming in the river near the almost century-old Tel-Electric Dam on Mill Street.

His body was recovered in the dam's spillway, where it had become pinned against a grate.
