Pittsfield drug arrests mounting
PITTSFIELD -- Police have made a number of drug-charge arrests in the past two weeks, three of which are related to a wiretap case that's already seen seven men hauled in to court to face charges.
The Berkshire County Drug Task Force conducted a two-month investigation into cocaine dealing in the Pittsfield area beginning in February that culminated in a roundup of seven suspects on April 27. In the following days, three more arrests related to that case were made. The Drug Task Force has used wiretaps in the course of its investigation.
Lamar L. Powell, 34; Carey A. Pilot, 39; and Brian K. Podavini, 41, all of Pittsfield, have pleaded not guilty in Central Berkshire District Court to single counts of conspiracy to violate the drug laws and are out on personal recognizance.
On April 30, Bryan Jefferson, 32; Jamel Nicholson, 23; Jacob Sweener, 22; Jermaine Eurquhart, 40; and Eugene Jones, 35, all of Pittsfield, were arraigned on charges of conspiracy to violate drug laws and are free either on bail or personal recognizance.
Two other men, Mitchell Gross jung, 24, the owner of Herman Alex ander's Bar, 24 Lyman St., and Anthony Thompson, 32, both of Pittsfield, were charged with registering bets for allegedly paying out winnings on two video poker machines at the bar.
Police allege Herman Alexander's was being used as a "depot for the open air market of drug transactions."
Four other men have been arrested on the heels of a raid at that establishment on unrelated cocaine distribution charges.
On May 3, Devin L. Newman, 22, who has both Pittsfield and Spring field addresses listed in court documents, was arrested on two counts of cocaine distribution for allegedly selling drugs to a police informant in December and January. Arraigned the next day, he is out on $500 bail.
Denzel Moody, 19, of Pittsfield, was arrested on May 4 on three counts of cocaine distribution and two counts of drug violation in a school zone for allegedly selling drugs to a police informant in August 2011. He too is out on $500 bail.
Marcus D. James, 29, of Springfield was arrested the same day as Moody and charged with cocaine trafficking as a subsequent offense. He was allegedly found with close to 30 grams of cocaine on his person following a traffic stop in Pittsfield. He is being held on $15,000 cash or $150,000 bail bond following his May 7 arraignment in Central District Court.
On Wednesday, 39-year-old Corey A. Pilot of Pittsfield was arrested and charged with three counts of cocaine distribution, two counts of drug violation in a school zone, and a single count of cocaine possession with the intent to distribute for allegedly selling drugs to a police informant. Police said they also found drugs on Pilot when he was arrested. He is currently out on $300 bail.
All the defendants have pleaded not guilty to their charges.
