Pittsfield: Dwyer Funeral Home sponsors Christmas stockings for soldiers

PITTSFIELD >> Dwyer Funeral Home is sponsoring "Stockings for Our Troops" for the second year.

Last year, the funeral home provided Christmas stockings for over 200 troops serving on the front lines in Afghanistan.

The troops were so appreciative that they made a phone call to Rob Dwyer soon after the stockings arrived.

"The genuine, heartfelt thanks expressed in that phone call truly convinced me that this should be an annual event and we should never forget the sacrifices made by our troops, especially during the holidays," said Dwyer.

This year, Dwyer received requests from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Cameroon, Africa.

About 180 stockings are ready to ship to Iraq and Africa, leaving about 80 unfilled stockings for Afghanistan.

Free stockings with a list of suggestions may be picked up between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North St.

Stockings must be returned no later than 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, in order to make it to their destinations by the holiday. Dwyer Funeral Home will ship the stockings at their expense.
