Pittsfield engineering firm hires manager for new venture
PITTSFIELD -- A local engineering firm has hired a project manager with international experience to head a new venture it has developed and formed a business arrangement with the GlobalFoundries micro chip facility in Malta, N.Y.
EDM Services Inc. has named Tom Meyer president of its new project management division, Paramount Project Management, which was established earlier this year. EDM, which also has offices in Farmington, Conn., and Al bany, N.Y., has entered into a general services agreement with GlobalFoundries, president Ronald Griffin said.
Griffin said EDM became involved with Global Foun dries after the microchip manufacturer received a referral from another client that the Pittsfield company had provided services for.
He said EDM and Global Foundries have formed an "on-call relationship" in which the microchip manufacturer can access the Pittsfield company's engineering or architectural services on a needs basis.
"We're basically an extension of their facilities group, based on our experience and capabilities," Griffin said, "They might not have a fire protection engineer, but we do."
Berkshire business leaders have long been interested in establishing relations with GlobalFoundries whose large microchip facility in Malta -- roughly 60 miles northwest of Pittsfield -- is helping to revitalize the economy in upstate New York.
But it could not be determined whether EDM is the first Berkshire-based firm to become involved with the microchip manufacturer. GlobalFoundries spokesman Travis Bullard did not return a telephone call seeking comment.
Incorporated in 1988, EDM is a multi-disciplinary architectural and engineering firm. Griffin said EDM formed Paramount to add value to the company's existing strengths.
"I've thought all along that having a project management component would add value to the architectural and engineering sides of EDM because we literally now can take a project from what I call vision to reality," he said. "A lot of good developers and owners have good ideas that they'd like to implement for their business, but they don't know how to implement them. Tom and the project management piece will be the first ones in to help a project."
Meyer, 58, has more than 30 years of experience in project and construction management. He spent the last seven years with the Rise Group, a firm that has offices in Boston and Chicago. He recently completed a project that is associated with the expansion of The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown.
After completing a project in London, Meyer, a native of Chicago, relocated to the New England area permanently in 2008. He and Griffin met through a mutual friend.
"We fell in love with the Berkshires," said Meyer, referring to his family. "The opportunity came up and I decided to stay here."
A West Point graduate, who retired from the Army with the rank of captain, Meyer will be responsible for Paramount's day-to-day operations, and growth into new markets in western Massachusetts, northern Connecticut and upstate New York. He is currently Paramount's lone employee.
"I spent a fair amount of time with Tom talking and socializing," Griffin said. "He really fit the EDM mold."
