Pittsfield: Exhibit showcases artists living with dementia
PITTSFIELD >> An opening reception for Memories in the Making will take place during First Friday's Artswalk from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7. A gallery of paintings done by Berkshire residents with Alzheimer's or a related dementia will be on display at Downtown Pittsfield Inc., across from City Hall.
The public is invited to view the artwork and enjoy a glass of wine and refreshments. There will be music by Steve Smith and Bobbie Orsi throughout the evening.
This is the third Memories in the Making sponsored by the Berkshire Alzheimer's Partnership. This program, developed by the Alzheimer's Association, shows that, through art, people coping with a memory disorder often can tap into old memories and reconnect with family members, opening a new avenue for communication.
The program also strives to improve self-esteem, provide an emotional outlet, improve focus and reduce isolation.
This year's art show includes artists who live in assisted living facilities, nursing homes and several who reside at home with a spouse or caregiver.
