Pittsfield firefighters get back to work on First Street Common skating rink

PITTSFIELD -- With colder temperatures in the forecast, a group of Pittsfield firefighters intends to get back to work making an ice skating rink at the Common on First Street.

The firefighters sprayed water for a rink earlier this month, but above-freezing temperatures melted the ice.

"All that work we put into it, unfortunately, is gone," said Don Whalen, the Pittsfield firefighter who started the project.

Luckily for Whalen and his crew, the weather forecast over the next few days includes below-freezing temperatures and snowfall.

"That's perfect for what we're trying to do," Whalen said. "We're going to try at night because obviously the temperatures are better."

Whalen was optimistic.

"Maybe by Sunday we'll all be skating," he said.
