Pittsfield Halloween parade set for 7 p.m. tonight

Friday October 26, 2012

PITTSFIELD -- The city has scared up more participants for tonight’s annual Halloween parade.

The parade steps off at 7 p.m. from the corner of Tyler and Smith streets and ends at Woodlawn Avenue.

Pittsfield Community Television is scheduled to broadcast the event live on Time Warner Cable’s Channel 16.

Organizers say four additional groups will march down Tyler, thanks to a one-week extension of the entry deadline.

"We got a couple we weren’t anticipating at all, so extending the deadline helped and was a re minder to others who’ve march ed in the past," said Re becca Tefft, the city’s recreational activities coordinator.

In all, the parade lineup consists of 25 units, including three floats, marching bands from Pittsfield, Taconic and Drury high schools, four of the eight Pittsfield elementary schools and a number of community-based and business organizations, according to Tefft.

"The community groups usually dress up in costume and have fun in the parade, while promoting their organization," she said.

Thomas N. Bowler will be the grand marshal, continuing a long-standing tradition of the Berkshire County sheriff leading the parade. Greylock Federal Credit Union is the main sponsor for the event.

Traditionally a North Street event, the Halloween parade was moved to Tyler Street last year -- on a trial basis -- at the request of the Tyler Street Business Group and Ward 1 Councilor Christine Yon and former city councilor Peter T. White in an effort to showcase the commercial district.

The move received such rave reviews from some Tyler Street merchants, marchers and parade-goers, that city officials agreed, for now, to keep the event on Tyler.
