Pittsfield: Irish American Club names Cora Cooney Irish American of the Year


The Irish American Club of Berkshire County has named Cora E. Cooney of Dalton as recipient of the 2014 Berkshire County Irish American of the Year Award.

The award will be presented to Cooney at the Club’s 52nd annual St. Patrick’s dinner on Saturday, March 15, at the Elks Club on Union Street. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

A corned beef dinner including appetizers will be served. Irish entertainment will be provided by the Dossers. John O’Connor will be the piper for the event.

Cora E. Kirchner Cooney was born Dec. 31, 1930, in Pittsfield and graduated from the former Dalton High School in 1948 and from the former Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1951.

A member of Sacred Heart Church in Pittsfield all of her life, Cooney became a Eucharistic minister in 1981. In addition to serving the church, she delivered communion to Maple View and Providence Care Nursing Homes.

Cooney and her husband, Jack Cooney, have been members of the Irish American Club since 1967 and have traveled to Ireland 15 times. They turned their home on Kirchner Road, Dalton, into "Cooney’s Irish Acres" Bed and Breakfast where they catered to Berkshire tourists and served authentic Irish breakfasts for eight years.
