Pittsfield: Lecturer to discuss Shakespeare’s ‘dark lady’


The Jewish Federation of the Berkshires will present "The Unlikely Tale of Amelia Bassano" with journalist, author, and lecturer Andrée Aelion Brooks at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at Congregation Knesset Israel, 16 Colt Road.

In her presentation, Brooks will note Amelia Bassano as "Shakespeare’s Dark Lady," a woman of Italian Jewish descent who played a significant role in "the back story" of the Bard’s "The Merchant of Venice."

An associate fellow at Yale University, for 18 years Brooks was a contributing columnist and news writer for The New York Times.

The program is open to the public at a cost of $3.
