Pittsfield man charged with hit and run after being blocked in by driver he allegedly hit

PITTSFIELD -- City police didn't have far to look for the driver of an alleged hit-and-run accident on Saturday. The other motorist had chased him down and blocked him in on a dead end street until police arrived.

Raul Rosario, 22, of Madison Avenue, was arrested on single counts of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and driving without a license. On Monday, he pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on his own recognizance.

According to a Pittsfield Police report, a 2005 Dodge Dakota driven by 69-year-old Edward F. Barnes was rear-ended by Rosario on Tyler Street about 11:20 a.m. Saturday as Barnes stopped at a crosswalk to let a pedestrian pass.

Rosario allegedly then fled the scene, but was pursued by the older man, who followed Rosario to Myrtle Street. Rosario attempted to turn around, got the rear end of his Chevrolet Ventura stuck in a snowbank, and was then blocked in by Barnes.

Rosario allegedly pleaded with Barnes to let him go and not to call police because he was on parole, was wearing an ankle monitoring device, and didn't want to go back to jail.

Rosario did not have any previous cases out of Central Berkshire District Court and the report did not give any more information about Rosario's record, if any.

While speaking to police, Barnes began complaining of pain in the left side of his face and neck and was transported to Berkshire Medical Center for treatment. He has since been released.

According to police, a woman who witnessed the accident backed Barnes' version of how the crash happened.

On Monday, Rosario was appointed attorney William D. Barry to represent him and was released by Judge Fredric D. Rutberg.
