LENOX — The body of a Pittsfield man, who was reported missing earlier this week, was discovered Wednesday afternoon in October Mountain State Forest.

Matthew J. Gottung, 33, was found dead about 3 p.m., about 50 yards off of Switchback Trail, according to the Berkshire District Attorney's office. Foul play is not suspected.

Gottung's vehicle was found abandoned Monday on Roaring Brook Road. He was found not far from that vehicle, according to the DA.

The abandoned vehicle had been traced via satellite system to a location at the Lee-Lenox line on Roaring Brook Road.

Pittsfield Police at the time the search launched said Gottung was possibly suicidal. The cause of Gottung's death was not released Thursday morning.

State and local police, first responders and the Berkshire Mountain Search and Rescue team searched the area Monday until dark and resumed their search on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Those involved in the search included members of the Lee and Lenox Police Departments, Lee and Lenox Fire Departments, Berkshire Mountain Search and Rescue, Massachusetts Environmental Police, Berkshire County Sheriff's Office, Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Lee barracks and state police detectives assigned to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office.
