PITTSFIELD -- A Pittsfield man is being held on $5,000 bail on charges he punched and kicked his girlfriend at her residence last month.

Jameail Beckett, 30, is accused of striking his girlfriend multiple times in the bathroom of her Orchard Street home.

Police responding to a call for help from other residents of the home heard the woman screaming in the bathroom, according to police.

Beckett was found on top of his girlfriend and allegedly assaulting her while she lay on the floor.

According to the victim, Beckett went to her residence to do his laundry. He became enraged when she told him she was taking her child to the mall. Beckett allegedly wouldn't let her leave and punched her in the face. He held her down, punched and kicked her in the stomach, she told police.

He pleaded not guilty in Berkshire Superior Court on Thursday on charges of assault and battery, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for using his shoe to kick her.

Judge John Agostini ordered him remanded to the Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction on $5,000 bail.
