Pittsfield man struck, severely hurt by train

PITTSFIELD -- A 23-year-old man, identified by police as David Shoemaker of West Housatonic Street in Pittsfield, was taken to Berkshire Med ical Center early Saturday morning with life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a freight train, police said.

The incident was reported at 12:44 a.m., and occurred in the vicinity of the CSX Railroad bridge on Woodlawn Avenue, which is located in the William Stanley Business Park of the Berkshires.

Authorities who responded to the scene found Shoemaker alive just west of the bridge. The Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene.

Police have yet to determine why Shoemaker was on the tracks.

According to police, the freight train stopped after striking Shoemaker. The incident was reported to police by CSX Railroad personnel.

No further information was available Saturday.
