Pittsfield Post 68 falls for first time this season
PITTSFIELD — The Pittsfield Post 68 baseball team was handed its first loss of the season on Tuesday, losing to Northampton Post 28 by a score of 4-2.
"[Northampton] is a very good team, and we didn't execute," Post 68 coach Pat Bassi said. "We made a couple physical errors and just couldn't hit."
On the mound for Pittsfield (4-1 overall, 2-1 Western Mass.) was Ethan Forfa. Post 28 jumped on the board in the top of the first as Hector DeJesus scored on a single by Pat Greojocewicz.
Northampton then manufactured two more runs in the top of the third while taking advantage of a few errors by Pittsfield, making the score 3-0.
"I didn't really have it going until the later innings," Forfa said. "I haven't pitched in a bit and my arm didn't feel as hot as it should've been."
On the mound for Post 28 was Zac Britton, who didn't allow a baserunner until the third inning. Pittsfield cut into the lead in the bottom of the third as Shane Tierney scored on a passed ball, making the score 3-1.
Forfa settled down in the top of the fourth. He struck out four of the remaining eight batters he faced over the next two innings.
"I usually start to feel better in the middle of the game," Forfa said. "I had to get acclimated to the field."
Pittsfield started the bottom of the fifth with a single by Sam Fick. Tierney and Mike Downer helped move Fick to third before and then Fick scored on a grounded by Abdiel Cotto, shrinking the Post 28 lead to one.
Post 68 was unable to keep the lead at one run as the bottom of the order came up big for Northampton. Three-straight hits led to an RBI single from shortstop Tim Horton, extending the lead 4-2.
Hunter Salem pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh for Northampton, picking up the save as Post 28 improved to 5-1 on the season.
"We faced a very good team," Bassi said. "It is going to take a while for the team to get situated, but we have to bounce back tomorrow.
"I [told them] that you lose a lot of games by one or two runs if you don't come prepared everyday."
Post 68 plays again today at Wahconah Park against Springfield. First pitch is set for 5:45 p.m.
Zac Britton (6), Hunter Salem (1) and Andrew Serio. Ethan Forfa (6), Patrick Colvin and Brett Murphy. W — Britton. L — Forfa. S — Salem.
