Pittsfield power outage blamed on vines on line

Wednesday August 29, 2012

PITTSFIELDS -- Vines strangling a power line are to blame for a brief blackout Wednesday afternoon in the southwest section of the city.

According to Western Massachusetts Electric Co., the outage occurred around 2 p.m. when vines that had crept onto a utility poll on West Housatonic Street finally brought down the electrical wire.

A WMECO spokeswoman couldn't say how many homes and businesses lost power. Service was quickly restored within 30 minutes by utility crews.
