Pittsfield rolls in Babe Ruth 15s


PITTSFIELD -- The Pittsfield 15-year old Babe Ruth All-Stars have earned a first-round bye in this coming weekend's elimination tournament.

Pittsfield finished 3-0 in pool play by beating Northbridge 14-2 Saturday in a mercy-rule, five-inning game.

"It's a testament to how good our league is," Pittsfield manager Pat Tierney said when asked if he was surprised how easily Pittsfield rolled through Pool A. "It's a testament to the quality of play in our city and in our league."

Abdiel Cotto went three of the five innings to get the win. He helped his cause by walking and hitting a two-run triple in Pittsfield's nine-run first inning.

Matthew Stracuzzi had a single and a double for Pittsfield, Shane Tierney, Ross Omelenchuck and Simon Nassif each had two hits and Jack Scarafoni tripled.

Jordan and Simon Nassif each pitched an inning of relief for Pittsfield.

Babe Ruth 14-year olds

WORCESTER -- Pittsfield will play Westfield in today's championship game after Pittsfield routed Worcester West 12-0 and Westfield beat Worcester East 18-0.

Hunter Brazie pitched 4 1/3 out of five innings to get the win. He helped his cause by going 2 for 3.

Izaiya Mestre had two hits and two RBI for Pittsfield. Anthony Whiteley and Ty Cowdrey each had a hit and two RBI, Devon Walker had two hits while Drew DeMartino and Brett Murphy also had hits for Pittsfield.

Babe Ruth 13-year olds

WESTFIELD -- Pittsfield advanced to the Western State championship with a 13-2 win over Holden.

The win came one day after Westfield beat Pittsfield 3-1. The Pittsfield nine will need to win twice against Westfield today in order to claim the title.

"We match up well against them," said Pittsfield manager Tom Rizzo. "It comes down to pitching."

On Saturday, it came down to hitting in the mercy-rule, five-inning game. Pittsfield broke the game open in the third inning, scoring seven runs on six hits.

Ryan Gaudette, Mike O'Brien and Joe Woronick all had three hits in support of winning pitcher Hayden Harrington.

Friday night, Ian Benoit gave up one earned run in going the distance of Westfield's 3-1 win.

Cedric Rose led Pittsfield with three hits. Gaudette added a double and a run scored.

10-11 Little League

NORTH ADAMS -- It will be Pittsfield South and Myron Gray Pittsfield West playing for the District 1 10-11 Little League title today.

Pittsfield South advanced with a 23-4 win over North Adams, while West beat Don Gleason Pittsfield North 4-0.

Today's game will begin at noon at Fallon Field.

Jared Jansen threw a complete game for Pittsfield West, and helped his own cause by going 3 for 3 with two runs batted in. Nick Hall had a single and scored a run.

For Pittsfield North, Mike Zwingelstein finished 2 for 3, while Parker Winters, Wayne Moore and Kyle MacDonald all had hits.

In the other game, Pat Rindfuss got the win and helped his cause by going 2 for 5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Andrew Watkins was 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, five RBI and three runs scored.

Mia Potash ahd a hit, three RBI and three runs scored, while London Steinman hit a triple, drove in three and scored three. Bo Bramer went 2 for 2 with an RBI and three runs scored. Shane Bernardo doubled while Brendan Stannard scored three runs on three walks.
