Pittsfield: Sculling Society offers rowing lessons


Berkshire Rowing and Sculling Society has opened its boathouse on Onota Lake for its 21st season. Hours are 6 to 10 a.m. daily plus some evenings.

The season starts with a free demonstration from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, June 4. To try sculling, call 413-442-7769 for a reservation at the 8 a.m. or 10 a.m. session. Spectators are welcome.

At demo day, new members may sign up for beginner classes. Classes are held twice weekly at 6 a.m. Classes also may be scheduled evenings and weekends.

A program is offered especially for middle school through high school ages.

The fee to join the group is $75. Members may sign up for four 90-minute classes for $55, for a total of $130. Checks will be accepted at the site, but not credit cards.

To reach the boathouse, take Lakeway Drive across from Taconic High School on Valentine Road, turn right and follow signs to the north end of the beach.
