Pittsfield: South Mountain offers music scholarships

South Mountain Association will offer the Willem Willeke Memorial Scholarships for the 33rd consecutive year. This year, $20,000 in grant money may be available.

The scholarships are granted to students of violin, viola or cello who have as a goal a professional career in music. The purpose is to supplement the cost of college level or professional training.

While preference is given to high school seniors, candidates may apply up to their 25th birthday.

Applicants must reside or study in Berkshire County and are eligible to apply no later than April 1. Application forms have been sent to area schools, colleges and libraries.

Applications also are available by writing South Mountain Association, P.O. Box 23, Pittsfield, MA 01202.

The scholarship program was established to honor Willem Willeke, an internationally known cellist and music director of South Mountain Concerts for many years until his death in 1950.
