PITTSFIELD — Pittsfield junior Lessley Columna knew she had the mental toughness to start fast and maintain her lead in the one-mile race against Taconic on Wednesday.

The teams competed in sunny, 50-degree weather at Taconic — and after the Generals' chilly scrimmage meet against Amherst last Friday — 50 degrees felt like 75.

Columna finished first (6:15.51), helping the Pittsfield girls win 86-55. The Pittsfield boys had a strong meet as well, winning 100-41.

"It's good to be out here," Columna said of finishing the first meet of the season. "Usually when it's too cold my whole body starts to hurt, but I have mental strength that pushes me forward."

Columna added that once she got out to a big lead, she told herself to not let up and finish strong.

She was one of 10 first-place finishers. Kamea Quetti won two events for Pittsfield. She finished first in the 800-meter with a 2:43.88 time, and first in the long jump with a 13'4" distance.

Pittsfield's Shelia Attiemo won both the shot put and discus with a 30 feet, 1 inch toss and a 61 feet, 5 inch toss, respectively. Gianna Paris led the Taconic girls, notching two first-place finishes. She won the 100-meter in 13.53 seconds and the 200-meter in 28:45 seconds. Paris set personal bests in both events, despite limited time on the track.

"Knowing that I got personal bests in everything I did, I was very proud of myself, especially for a first meet," she said. "This year during the first month inside before the season started, we did a lot of workouts that helped us strength train. So that really helped me."

Kevin Rayner and Jackson Rich led the Pittsfield boys to victory. Rayner finished first in the one-mile with a 4:38.81 minute time and the two-mile with a 10:52.17 time.

Rich finished first in the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:03.43 time and first in the javelin with a 124-feet, 10-inch distance. Rich qualified for the Western Massachusetts in the 110-meter hurdles last season, however, this season, he decided to try the 400 hurdles without much practice to great success.

"I remember some of my steps from last year, but the fatigue toward the end kind of got me," he said. "[I focused on] really pumping my arms and trying to stride out and not stutter before the hurdles. That really kills my time," he said when asked how he battled through the fatigue.

Pittsfield's Emmanuel Amenlemeh set a personal best in the long jump with a 18-1 distance. Nate Robarge qualified for Western Mass. in the triple jump with a 38-6 jump. Zage Gage led Taconic, winning three events. He finished first in the 100-meter in 11.84 seconds, first in the 200-meter with a 25.05 second finish and first in the high jump, clearing 5-feet, four inches.

With new faces competing well and several athletes setting personal bests, Pittsfield coach Joe Albano said he was happy with his team's first meet of the year.

"I think they did pretty well overall," he said. "The times and distances aren't the best. We've got a long way to go to be competitive in the county, but for our first official track meet they handled it good."
