Pittsfield teen denies $1,500 in alcohol thefts from supermarket

PITTSFIELD -- An 18-year-old Pittsfield teen has been charged with stealing nearly $1,500 in alcohol from a grocery store within a span of 22 days.

On Tuesday in Central Berkshire District Court, Caitlin L. Maynard, 18, of New Hampshire Avenue, was arraigned on 20 misdemeanors, 10 charges each of shoplifting and possession of alcohol by a person under 21. She pleaded not guilty.

Maynard told the court she planned to hire her own lawyer. She was released on personal recognizance and was told to be back in court on May 21.

According to a Pittsfield Police report, Maynard stole liquor from the Price Chopper on Hubbard Avenue 10 times and managed to make off with $1,476.62 in alcohol. The incidents ranged from Jan. 17 to Feb. 8.

Maynard's younger sister, who is 16, also was charged by police with seven counts each of shoplifting and possession of alcohol by a person under 21. Because of the girl's age, no other information was available on her court case.

The two teens were allegedly caught on tape and admitted it was them on the security tape, according to police.

Police began the investigation in February. Neither teen was arrested; Caitlyn Maynard was summonsed in to court on Tuesday.

Shoplifting and possession of alcohol charges are punishable by fines upon conviction.
