Pittsfield train accident victim's condition critical
PITTSFIELD -- The man struck by a train over the weekend was listed in critical condition on Monday at Albany Medical Center.
David Shoemaker, 23, of Pittsfield, suffered multiple skull fractures and amputations early Saturday morning when he was run over by a freight train. Police haven’t determined why Shoemaker was on the CSX Railroad tracks near Silver Lake Boulevard.
When rescuers arrived around 2:45 a.m., Shoemaker was under one of the cars toward the end of the 19-car train, according to a report by the Pittsfield Fire Depart ment. He was taken to Berkshire Medical Center and later to Albany Medical Center in New York.
Shoemaker is the second man struck by a train this year in Pittsfield.
On Feb. 28, John Caston guay was killed after being hit by a pair of locomotives on the tracks near Depot Street.
