Pittsfield voters have say their say Tuesday

PITTSFIELD -- City voters on Tuesday will have their say on an at large City Council race with seven candidates seeking four seats, three ward council races, a School Committee race and whether Pittsfield will see its first charter overhaul in 80 years.

The at large council race features incumbents Churchill Cotton, Barry Clairmont and Melissa Mazzeo, along with challengers Donna Todd Rivers, James Conant, Mark Miller and Kathleen Amuso.

Ward 1 is a contest between incumbent Christine Yon and Lisa Tully.

Ward 3 has two non-incumbents, Richard Latura and Nicholas Caccamo, seeking a seat. Incumbent Paul Capitanio is not seeking re-election.

Ward 6 has incumbent John Krol facing Joseph Nichols.

In the School Committee race, incumbents Daniel Elias and Katherine Yon face challengers Josh Cutler, Brittany Douglas, Cynthia Taylor, Anthony Riello and Pamela Farron.

There are seven committee candidates for six open seats. The mayor also sits on the board.

The proposed new charter is a top-to-bottom revision prepared over the spring and summer by an 11-member study group working with a consultant. It updates antiquated language since the last complete revision and attempts to address concerns raised about the current charter.

The charter document is posted online on the Pittsfield website, www.cityofpittsfield. org under the heading GOVERNMENT at the top of the home page.

Unopposed on the city ballot are Mayor Daniel L. Bianchi, for a second term; City Clerk Linda Tyer, Ward 2 Councilor Kevin Morani, Ward 4 Councilor Christopher Connell, Ward 5 Councilor Jonathan Lothrop, and Ward 7 Councilor Anthony Simonelli.

Polls will be open Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
