Pittsfield welcomes new health director
PITTSFIELD -- The Board of Health this week welcomed new Health Director Gina Armstrong, who was hired last month to replace Merridith A. O'Leary, who stepped down in August to accept a similar position in Northampton.
Armstrong won final confirmation Tuesday by the City Council. She is the former deputy director of the Columbia County Healthcare Consortium in Hudson, N.Y., and plans to start in the department office on Monday.
The health director is responsible for managing Health Department duties, including inspections of restaurants, lodging facilities and septic systems.
Board members also said a search is under way to replace Senior Sanitarian Cory Nicholas, who resigned last month.
Interim Chairwoman Roberta "Bobbi" Orsi said there is an internal candidate and applications still are being accepted.
The department also recently hired a sanitarian, Colin Sykes, who has begun working.
