Pittsfield woman crashes into cars, building
PITTSFIELD -- An elderly woman avoided injury Wednesday after she ran a red light, crashing into two vehicles and a vacant building.
Antoinette Betty Mele, 83, of Pittsfield, was driving west on Fenn Street shortly after 1:30 p.m. when she drove through a stoplight and crashed into a van driven by John Kastrinakis as he was driving south on First Street, police said.
Silver said after colliding into the van, Mele's Toyota Camry bounced off a car driven by Tina Kickery -- who was stopped at the intersection heading east on Fenn Street -- then crashed into the side of a building located next to Re-Lach's Lounge and adjacent to King Cone.
A portion of Fenn Street was closed for roughly a half-hour as police cleared the scene.
"There was a car in front of me that made a right turn and I followed it," Mele told The Eagle. "I didn't see the light change and when I got hit by the first car (the van) I lost control of the car and ended up against the building."
Mele's car was towed from the scene with heavy body damage to the passenger side, but both other vehicles were driven away safely, Silver said.
The crash left only a few scratches on the building.
It's unclear if Mele was cited.
