Pittsfield: Women of Color Giving Circle to honor graduates


The public is invited to attend the ninth annual Berkshire Graduates of Color Celebration at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3, in the ballroom on the second floor of 297 North St., above MadJack’s Barbecue, caterer and a sponsor of the celebration.

The event is organized and sponsored by the Women of Color Giving Circle to honor and recognize the upcoming 2014 Berkshire County high school graduates of color.

The keynote speaker is Barbara Krauthammer, associate professor of history at University of Massachusetts Amherst and co-author of "Envisioning Emancipation: Black Americans and the End of Slavery."

Jake McCandless, superintendent of Pittsfield Schools, will also speak at the event.

This year, there are 47 graduates throughout Berkshire County that have completed the graduation requirements. Many plan to pursue higher education and study a wide range of subjects from forensic science to the arts.

Each will receive a gift from both the Women of Color Giving Circle and Berkshire Community College.
