Pittsfield: YMCA announces free summer literacy program for below grade level readers

Posted

The Pittsfield Family YMCA is offering entering third-graders the opportunity to participate in a summer literacy program.

This grant-funded opportunity is made possible by the Massachusetts Alliance of the YMCAs and focuses on below grade level readers who would benefit from additional reading instruction over the summer.

Cara Marciano is a Mass. state-certified teacher, and she will be overseen by a master’s degree level educator. Students will participate in pre- and post-test assessments using the online STAR Assessment to monitor children’s improvement through the summer.

This program will be held from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from July 7 to Aug. 15 at Berkshire Community College. Participants must attend the Literacy Program the entire time. The literacy program is free for participants.

The YMCA holds its Camp Sumner at BCC and this program is held during before-camp care so that children may also attend Camp Sumner.

Financial scholarships are available for those children who also want to attend Camp Sumner. A separate registration and fee is needed. Contact Youth Development Director Jessie Rumlow at (413) 499-7650, ext. 11, or jrumlow@pittsfieldfamilyymca.org.
