Planning board member will not face recall vote in Sheffield

SHEFFIELD -- Planning Board member Maria Nation will not be recalled after a petition to hold the vote failed to receive support from 25 percent of town residents.

To host a recall vote, a first in the town since adopting its current bylaws, about 567 signatures would have to be collected. By the Wednesday deadline, 257 signatures had been turned in to the Sheffield Town Clerk's office, said Sheffield resident Marie Massini who turned in the paperwork.

Massini was part of a group that tried to recall Nation for a private e-mail she wrote criticizing some residents who opposed a measure that would finance an appeal in state Land Court for a Dollar General building permit.

The petition cites the letter as evidence that Nation had not acted impartially as a Planning Board member. But Nation, who apologized for the tone of the letter and said she regrets how she wrote the letter, rejected the suggestion.
