Police: 2 men arraigned in gravestone vandalism
Berkshire Eagle Staff
GREAT BARRINGTON -- Two men accused of knocking over a gravestone that left one of them with a broken leg were arraigned in district court Thursday.
Scott M. Moraes, 29, of Franklin Street in Lenox, and Aaron S. Dunn, 27, of Hubbard Avenue in Dalton, were arraigned in Southern Berkshire District Court on one count each of wanton destruction of property.
The incident that led to the charges occurred at St. Ann’s Cemetery on Ore Bed Road in Lenox around 12:30 a.m. on June 3. Investigators received a call from Moraes, who said his friend had been injured, according to a police report.
When police arrived at the scene, Moraes was carrying Dunn, who had apparently fallen off the headstone and suffered a compound fracture in his leg.
Moraes told police that Dunn had climbed on top of the headstone to get a better look at the moon, though investigators noted in their report that the 4-foot marble spire required considerable force to take down. Both men had been at local bars that night, according to police.
Moraes and Dunn are due back in court for pretrial hearings Aug. 8.
