Police: Car thief still on lam after attack, chase

BECKET -- Police say they are continuing to search for a Becket man who is wanted for allegedly attacking a relative, stealing a car and leading police on a high-speed chase in South County over the weekend.

The incident began at about 6:20 p.m. on Friday when Gary A. Weiner assaulted a family member at the intersection of Route 20 and Wells Road, not far from his Sherwood Forest development home, police said.

When confronted by police, Weiner fled in a pick-up, crashed on Gentian Hollow Road and then ran off on foot, police said. During the car chase, Weiner's speed reached 80 mph, and at times, he was driving in the breakdown lane.

Police say he later stole a motor vehicle, was again pursued by police, and again crashed and fled on foot.

The Becket Police said Monday there was nothing new to report in the case.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Becket Police Department at (413) 623-6010.
